San Josef River locally known as San Josef Beach and associated with Cape Scott is a favorite location to visit for Port Alice locals and visitors especially at low tide when the SEA STACKS and SEA CAVES can be seen and explored.
The 3 km trail to San Josef Beach from the Cape Scott trailhead parking lot is one of very few WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE trails around.
A second trail running from the beach itself and beyond can be accessed at low tide and takes you over Mount St. Patrick a scenic viewpoint at 422m in height. The trail continues to Sea Otter Cove and then further to Lowrie Bay where rec sites are available.
A shallow gravel boat launch is available from the San Josef River recreation site aka Heritage Park just before you get to the Cape Scott trail head parking lot … it launches into the San Josef River…which you can then paddle down to beautiful San Josef Bay.
Ronning’s Garden is an old heritage garden created by original homesteaders long gone. You can find it just off the San Josef Main logging road …watch for the sign… parking is available and a short forest trail takes you to the hillside garden planted with many varieties of Rhododendrons and numerous “Monkey Puzzle” trees as well as vast beds of other perennials.
